Hi
Ive had a few problmes of the past week with my dell inspiron 1501 (you may have seen numerouse threads). I decided to go to dell support with the problems and they helped me through. However the other day the guy told me to repair windows off the operating disk/DVD to get rid of a message about some drivers gone missing or something. However i turn on te Laptop the next day and a message pops up saying WINDOWSSystem32ConfigSystem was missing or corrupt and press r to repair. I told the guy and he said to re format the hard drive and put a fresh instillation of Windows OS. So i went through the steps on the mcrosoft website he said about and i get these partitions to work from:
-: Partition1 [FAT] 110MB
C: Partition2 [NTFS] 109600 MB <108430 MB Free.
Unpartitioned space 8BM
E: Partition 3 [FAT 32] 4754 MB <1383 MB Free>

I went on to select the C: drive and it came up with a message saying
You chose to install Windows XP on a partition that contains another operating system. Installing Windows XP might cause the other operating system to function improperly.
It gave the options to press ESC to go back and C to cotinue. I pressed C and it came up with these formating choices:
Format the partition using the NTFS file system quick
Format the partition using the NTFS file system
Leave the current file system intact

I have tried doing the quick way and it goes through but the message still apears i have done the repair option on the CD but it does nothing and i have tried the full re format and it took 8 hours to get through 2%. I thought that this was not right so im relying on you guys to help me as i really need the laptop before next monday and it seems Dell have deserted me.
Thanks

Jul 22, 2017  If you mount an NTFS drive with Paragon NTFS for Mac disabled, the drive will become a read-only volume, and you will need to remount it again after enabling the driver. This ‘feature’ aims to act as an emergency exit for worst-case scenarios, such as having an opened file with changes while the driver is disabled for some reason.

Summary

It's quite annoying when your USB transfer speed is extremely slow and you have a large size of files to transfer. To get your trouble off, we will show you the effective ways to vastly speed up your USB transfer. USB Transfer Speed Is Extremely Slow, How to Make It Faster?

'Does anyone know how to fix slow transfer speed from a USB flash drive? I got an extremely slow USB transfer speed when I tried to transfer files (about 2GB of files) from my computer to the USB drive. I waited for 2hours, but the transferring process was still at 15%. This was too slow. So I stopped the progress and tried again. Still, the same transferring speed on the USB drive. So how to make the file transferring speed faster? If you know the way, please let me know. Thank you.'

'USB transfer speed slow' is one of the commonest issues that may be encountered by users. Generally, the USB transfer speed depends on three factors:

  • The transfer speed of the USB port
  • The read speed of the source device
  • The write speed of the target device

Ideally speaking, USB 2.0 has a maximum transfer speed of 35MB per second and USB 3.0 400MB per second. If you find the transfer speed of your USB is substantially slower than the peak. You should consider improving it.Thus, if you want to increase the USB transfer speed, you can work from two directions: the transfer speed of the USB port and the read/write speed of the storage devices. Altogether, we provide users with six effective ways to speed up the USB transfer.

6 Ways to Speed Up USB Transfer

To make the file transfer on your USB much faster, the most useful method is to improve the transfer speed of your USB port. Based on our experience, there are three ways to help to increase the transfer speed of a USB port. If you think USB 3.0 is slow on Windows 10, these tips will be of great help to you.

Method 1. Connect the USB to Rear Port (for Desktop User Only)

When you transfer files between a desktop and a USB, it's highly likely you connect your USB to one of the front ports on the computer. If you want to speed up your USB transfer speed immediately, connect your USB flash drive to one of the rear ports instead.

Why inserting the USB to a rear port can increase the transfer speed? The rear ports are soldered on the motherboard of your computer. They run off the Intel chipset directly. While the front ports are connected to your motherboard via a cable or something alike. And the front ports run off the add-on chip on the board. Thus, the rear ports have a faster transfer speed than the front ones. If you think it's inconvenient to connect to your USB flash drive to the back of your computer, use a USB hub has the same effect to speed up your USB transfer.

Besides, the rear ports provide a more stable power supply than the front ones. Therefore, connecting an external storage device to the rear port may be helpful to solve problems like 'please insert a disk into removable disk', 'external hard drive light blinking but not working', and more.

Method 2. Update USB/Chipset Drivers

If you are using a laptop, the USB port you are using is usually connected to the chipset. Thus, if you want to want to solve the problem of 'USB transfer speed slow', you can try to update the USB driver or the chipset driver.

To update USB driver:

  • Step 1: Make sure your USB is connected. Right-click 'This PC' and go to 'Manage' > 'Device Manager'.
  • Step 2: Expand 'Disk Drives'. Right-click your USB flash drive and choose 'Update driver'.
  • Step 3: In the new window, choose 'Scan automatically for updated driver software'.

To update chipset driver:

  • Step 1: Make sure your USB is connected. Right-click 'This PC' and go to 'Manage' > 'Device Manager'.
  • Step 2: Expand 'System devices' and double-click the Intel chipset device in the list.
  • Step 3: Switch to the 'Driver' tab and click 'Update Driver'.

Method 3. Enable USB 3.0 Port

Generally, the USB 3.0 port is enabled by default. If your USB transfer speed is slow, you should have a check at whether the option is on.

  • Step 1: Enter BIOS. Restart your computer and hold down the BIOS key simultaneously. Then you will get into the BIOS menu. (The BIOS keys vary depending on your computer manufacturer. Generally, it's 'DEL' key, F2 or F10.)
  • Step 2: In BIOS, use the arrow keys (left and right) to choose the 'Advanced' tab.
  • Step 3: Then use the arrows keys (up and down) to choose 'USB Configuration' and hit 'Enter'.
  • Step 4: If you see the option 'USB 3.0 (or 2.0) Support' is disabled, use the arrow keys to choose it and hit 'Enter'.
  • Step 5: In the 'Options' window, select 'Enabled' and press 'Enter'.
  • Step 6: Press 'F10' to save the changes and exit BIOS. Then your computer will boot into Windows as normal.

If the USB support option is previously disabled, turning it on will greatly speed up your USB transfer.

The three tips above serve to improve the transfer speed of the USB port and thus further increase your USB transfer speed. The next three methods work to speed up your USB. (Caution. The last two methods below will erase the existing files on your USB flash drive. You should deliberate over the decision to operate.)

Method 4. Optimize the Performance of the USB

Outlook 2011 mac raw query for messages deleted today images. By optimizing the performance of your USB flash drive, you may have the chance to make its transfer speed faster.

  • Step 1: Right-click on the 'Windows' icon and select 'Device Manager'.
  • Step 2: Expand 'Disk drives' in Device Manager, find your USB device, right-click on your USB device and choose 'Properties'.
  • Step 3: Go to the 'Policies' tab, check 'Better performance', then click 'OK' to confirm that you want to optimize and improve your USB transfer speed.

After this, you can reboot your computer and then you should be able to use your USB drive and get a faster transfer speed by then.

Method 5. Convert FAT32 to NTFS

Compared between FAT32 and NTFS file systems, it seems that devices with NTFS work faster and more efficient for file transfer. So if your USB drive is FAT32 now, you can consider converting FAT32 to NTFS to increase your USB transfer speed.

However, this operation will erase all the files on your device. Thus, back up the files on your USB flash drive with free backup software - EaseUS Todo Backup, which is much faster than making a backup by copying files, before the converting process. Then follow the guide on how to convert USB from FAT32 to NTFS with EaseUS Partition Master, the free partition manager software, or follow the steps below to convert USB from FAT32 to NTFS with CMD command line.

  • Step 1: Click on'Start' and enter cmd.
  • Step 2: Right-click 'Command Prompt' and choose 'Run as administrator'.
  • Step 3: Type convert E: /fs:ntfs and hit 'Enter'. (Replace E: with the drive letter of your USB drive.)

Method 6. Format USB

If your USB drive is NTFS already, you can directly format the USB flash drive to gain a faster transfer speed. Similar to converting the file system of the USB, formatting the device will also remove the existing files on the device. Remember to back up your USB in advance.

  • Step 1: Connect USB to your PC and open'This PC'.
  • Step 2: Locate and right-click on USB flash drive, then select 'Format'.
  • Step 3: Set the file system to 'NTFS' and click 'Start', click 'OK' to complete the format process after the formatting.

After this, you'll get a fast and efficient USB flash drive for file transfer.

The Bottom Line

Nowadays, most users use the USB 3.0 port, which has a maximum transfer speed of 400MB per second. However, the real transfer speed is much lower than that, which is quite frustrating. Honestly speaking, when your USB transfer speed is slow, the most effective way to boost the transfer speed is to improve the transfer speed of the USB port. If you are still using USB 2.0, it's a good choice to switch to USB 3.0 instead.
